Ivan Schwebel

IIvan Schwebel's Biography

Ivan Schwebel was born in West Virginia. Ivan was sent to Japan after the Korean War as part of his U.S. army service, where he began to paint and studied with a Zen master-painter, Kimura Kyoen in Kyoto.


After studying art history at New York University, he moved to Israel in 1963. Ivan Schwebel's paintings are set in the urban environments of modern Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and New York, working from photographs, and often including biblical and Jewish legendary figures, such as King David, Job and the Matronita.
